What is an Inverter?
An inverter can be defined as an electric power converter responsible for:
- Converting alternate current from the grid to direct current to charge the battery
- Again converting direct current from the battery into an alternating current for running devices like fans, lights etc. during a power cut.
What is meant by 12 V inverter? How is it different from 24V inverter?
Every INVERTER is rated in VA and Volt. VA is the capacity of an INVERTER to run peak load and volt specifies the battery voltage for which the inverter is designed. The battery which is used in INVERTER application is lead acid battery with voltage in multiples of 12 Volt. Each lead acid battery has 6 cells of 2V each which gives the total voltage as 12V. Hence, a 12 Volt INVERTER means that it is designed to operate with 1 battery. A 24V inverter means that it is designed to operate with 2 lead acid batteries.
What is the difference between sine wave inverter and square wave inverter?
The primary job of inverter is to transform the DC power stored in the battery to AC power in order to run appliances during a power cut. The major difference between Sine and square wave inverter is in the output waveform received from the inverter. A square wave inverter produces an output that switches between positive, negative and zero volts whereas a sine wave inverter uses filtering to closely approximate a real sine wave which is similar to grid like electricity. Most of the household appliances are designed to work on sine wave which makes sine wave inverters safer than square wave. Also, sine wave inverters are reasonably quiet and no humming sound is observed from the connected load devices like fans, bulbs etc. However, sine wave inverters are little expensive than the square wave variants.

What is Regulated and non-regulated voltage output in the inverter?
All Luminous inverters come with Regulated (UPS) and non-regulated (Eco) mode. Let us understand the functionality of each mode briefly:
- ECO Mode- The inverter voltage operation range is between 100-290V when inverter is in ECO mode .i.e the inverter will keep charging the battery between the above voltage range. However, when the voltage decreases below 100 v or increases beyond 290 V, the inverter cuts the main supply and starts drawing current form the battery. This mode should be used to operate nominal loads such as lights or fans. This mode increases the battery life by minimizing battery use.
- UPS Mode- The inverter voltage operation range is between 180V-250V when inverter is in UPS mode .i.e the inverter will keep charging the battery between the above voltage range. However, when the voltage decreases below 180 v or increases beyond 250 V, the UPS inverter cuts the mains supply and switches to the battery. This ensures the safety of sensitive electronic devices, such as computers, hair driers, mixer grinder washing machines, televisions, etc.
Can I run heavy appliance like AC, Motors, mixer grinders on the inverter?
